As part of our Social Studies curriculum, we have been busy learning about the symbolism of designs and colors on pysanky, which are also known as Ukrainian Easter eggs. We have learned that pysanky are not simply pretty decorations, but are more specifically, eggs that are decorated with traditional Ukrainian folk designs.
The symbols and colors on Ukrainian Easter eggs each have special meaning. For example, brown is said to represent mother earth, while green represents hope, health and renewal. Pictures of grapes symbolize wisdom, while spiders represent patience. Students designed their eggs with this in mind. Before drawing their designs, students first explained what the symbols and colors they intended to use meant.
