Bigger bottom – better borrow!

We have been working on a variety of strategies during our number operations unit. We are getting really good at using;

– “breaking up the numbers” 63+22 = 80+5 = 85

– fact families (I know 25+25 =50 so I also know 50-25=25)

– counting on

This morning we worked on the concept of regrouping in subtraction.

Students used base ten blocks to show their thinking. If you know a member of 3W, please ask them what the saying “Bigger bottom, better borrow!” means.

Grade 3’s can you answer 73-57=  using this strategy? Show your parents! (Don’t forget to line up your ones and tens when you write the question down.)

For an extra challenge, try answering 203-168= at home. If you get it, let me know what your answer is.  I know you can do it!
